AI for Mental Health Support

Have you ever felt like there is no one to talk or share how you feel? And this makes you mentally exhausted. Artificial Intelligence or simply AI could be the solution. Artificial Intelligence is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. Manufacturing robots, Self-driving cars, smart assistants, Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools are some examples of AI. Artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistant/friend is what we need for mental health support. We all have heard about Google Assistant, Alexa, Siri, Cortana, Bixby, etc. These are artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistants. We can have a conversation with them. If we say we are sad, they try to comfort us. Although that doesn’t look like very genuine, but it’s quite promising. Day by day this technology is upgrading. In the future, we may see humanoid robots as smart assistant/friend for mental health support. This humanoid robot may listen to us or comfort us as a real person does. And this will look more genuine than the virtual assistant. We feel more mentally exhausted when we see that the other person is not listening actively or is not talking or acting genuinely. In that case, a humanoid robot will be much better as it will listen actively and their talk and act will be more genuine. The way up-gradation is happening right now, we will see the humanoid robot for mental health support pretty soon.

  1. There are several evidences of being affected by the technologies in the mental health section. Though the idea of getting a friend to talk to about your feelings is good but the impact is not proven though. The question is, "Is AI strong enough to detect the emotional state of human?". Good writing though.
