Why Nuclear energy could be the future of Energy Production?

There is no doubt that without Energy it is impossible to think to survive in the world. Can you imagine a day without electricity? 

In this article, I am going to discuss how energy is usually produced and why nuclear energy will be a significant contributor in the energy generation.

In today’s world, there are number of ways for the production of energy where primary sources of energy in the environment include fuels like coal, oil, natural gas, uranium, and biomass. Primary sources also include renewable sources such as sunlight, wind, moving water, a geothermal energy. If we compare the rate of energy production in terms of capacity factor, we see that nuclear energy surpasses all other ways of energy production.

Let me start to describe Nuclear energy in detail. When a heavy nucleus splits into several nuclei by a well-known nuclear fission process, an amount of energy is released from the reaction, which is known as nuclear energy. This fission process usually happened in nuclear power plants to generate electricity by nuclear chain reaction. Day by day, many countries are getting dependent on nuclear energy. For instance, Nuclear energy has been powering the United States for over 60 years, 72% of total French electricity generation in 2018 was generated from Nuclear energy (highest percentage in the world).

Why nuclear energy is the best? 

  • First and foremost, nuclear is a zero-emission clean energy source. Nuclear power reactors do not produce any carbon emissions. This is a huge advantage over traditional sources of energy, like fossil fuels, which releases tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. According to the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the United States avoided more than 476 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2019. In fact, according to NEI, nuclear electricity production prevents 528 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere annually.  
  • Secondly, Nuclear power plants operate at much higher capacity factors than renewable energy sources or fossil fuels. 
  • Last but not least, one of the biggest benefits of nuclear energy is that it is a reliable power generation source. Unlike solar and wind energy, a nuclear power can be generated at any time throughout the day. This means that a nuclear power plant can produce energy nonstop, and you won’t have to experience any delays in energy production.

The main Challenges of nuclear energy include its environmental impact, risk of nuclear accidents, radioactive waste management, and non-renew ability.

To sum up, by considering the pros and cons of nuclear energy, it is believed that with further technological advances for minimizing environmental radiation effect and accidents on a power plant, this zero-carbon energy source could be the top-most energy source in the future.
